JBL SilikatEx rapid is a synthetic iron oxide hydroxide which can bind high amounts of silicate and phosphate extremely quickly. It is ideally suited for lowering unwanted silicate contents in freshwater and saltwater.
Where does the silicate in aquarium and mains water come from?
Silicon is one of the most common elements in the world. As a result of the weathering of silicate rocks, silicon is washed into surface and ground water in the form of silicate. Mains water can therefore contain varying amounts of dissolved silicate. Mains water can contain up to 40 mg/l and, on rare occasions, even more. Silicate is non-toxic and thereis no threshold set in the regulations governing the quality of drinking water. What effect does silicate have in the aquarium?
In aquariums silicon provides a nutrient for algae (diatoms), some aquatic plants (e.g. hornwort), as well as siliceous sponges and some other invertebrates. When a new aquarium is set up or after a partial water change, brown coatings of algae (diatoms) often occur. Because of their skeleton of silicon, these algae are slightly rough to the touch, clearly distinguishing it from slimy algae. Filtering with JBL SilikatExrapid prevents the occurrence of these algae. Any coating of diatoms quickly disappears after filtering with JBL SilikatEx rapid.JBL SilikatEx rapid
