JBL Cermec is a filter medium consisting of porous ceramic pipes suitable for use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums. JBL Cermec can be used as a mechanical prefilter medium for coarse particles or as a biological filter medium. In my opinion these ceramic rings are just for mechanical filtration. I had them on the bottom (below the first media tray) of my JBL canister filter and they did their jod well. But I think these rings could be a little bit smaller.
