Aqua Medic Denigran is a type of granular media made of special plastic material to enhance the settlement of nitrate removing bacteria. The main nutrient, nitrate is removed from the algae without any chemical additives, additional feeding of the bacteria is not required. The optimal designed mesh bag gives the best possible water flow past the media. Depending on the population, Denigran will be effective for up to 12 months.
Thats why the nitrate content should be reduced Nitrate is produced in most aquaria from livestock feeding and dead plant matter, in larger quantities than it is consumed by the existing plants. One way to reduce the nitrate content is to change the water regularly or to use nitrate filters. In case the tap water has already higher nitrate content and the water desalination or controlling the nitrate filter is too complex, you can use the Aqua Medic Denigran. It is made from biodegradable plastic that's uses special bags designed to give low flow rate over the media even in fast flowing water. The lack of oxygen due to the low flow promotes bacteria that remove oxygen from the nitrate. Nitrogen gas then escapes. 1 - 2 bags are used for 50 litres of aquarium water, depending on the animals and nitrate content. Do not insert all the bags at once, but increase the number slowly at fortnight intervals. It is normal for the aquarium to become cloudy in the initial stage, this is produced by the multiplication of bacteria. If the cloudiness continues then the number of bags can be decreased. During the time, the granules are reduced by bacteria. The bags should then be gradually replaced, but not opened and refilled. Nitrogen gas accumulating in the bag is harmless. It can be removed by squeezing the bag. Usually, it takes 3 to 6 weeks until the granules are sufficiently populated by bacteria to take effect. Put the bags into the filter in a way that allows the water to flow around them, so that the filter will not be clogged. Aqua Medic Denigran does not replace the need for regular water changes. We recommend to change about a quarter in freshwater aquaria monthly, in saltwater aquaria 10 - 20 %.

Ich habe es in einen Filterbecken als Zentralfilter für eine kleine Aquarienanlage im Einsatz. Nach kurzer Einlaufzeit konnte man einen Rückgang der Nitratwerte messen. Es ist zwar nicht billig aber für meine Zwecke gut anwendbar. Wie es sich in einem Topffilter bewährt kann ich aber nicht sagen.
